We hope that by acknowledging the past, discussing the present and investing in the future we not only develop our own relationship, but aim to raise
an awareness of how we are connected to the places where we live, and to understand the psychology that underpins our furnishings, decor and household adornments.
Our conversations are shown in the comments boxes.Angie Butler: Letterpress Printed Artists' Bookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05415548914081932042noreply@blogger.comBlogger53125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3885871091736369107.post-48576067264001371702014-06-13T13:21:00.002+01:002014-06-14T16:18:12.400+01:00Closing the door on no.42 & no.18<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

that says when visiting a house you should always leave by the same door that
you entered, it seems more appropriate as we prepare to close our respective
doors that we exit via the back door. And here is mine – complete with
redundant cat flap – and tiny tin bird, which is beginning to rust. The
previous owners had added a very small extension onto the kitchen to house a
small utility area, and the back door forms part of that build; I think that is
why the walls have been painted – to disguise the use of new bricks. <br />
I hope you have enjoyed looking around. This joint experience of sharing our
homes has been an interesting one. It has made me consider and question the objects
that I own and the use and function of each room. It has also made me
appreciate things that I previously took for granted and to accept that old
houses will never be damp free!! Thank you for visiting.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Eat liquorice.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Actually I will eat liquorice mostly anywhere, but it's extremely nice (and satisfying) doing it whilst taking time to look at the little piece of nature beyond my back door.</span><br />

<br />
This is the view from my back door. I took this a couple of weeks ago, and the wallflowers are looking (and smelling) even better now. We also have the beginnings of a veranda happening. A roof structure is up with a corrugated see-thru plastic roof, and plans for the decking are being sorted. It keeps raining though, which is a bit of a bind, but good for the plants, anyway.<br />

Like chocolate, just any type of liquorice just doesn't cut it. For me,
having tried quite a few different brands, RJ's is my favourite. Pricey, but worth it.<br />

Whilst planting out my sweet peas the other weekend, I found yet another piece of blue and white in the soil.<br />
This plot has given me such pleasure in all that is has, and continues to reveal since S & I moved in: and it's a joy to share its secrets with you.Angie Butler: Letterpress Printed Artists' Bookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05415548914081932042noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3885871091736369107.post-20906604415762195012014-03-26T21:04:00.000+00:002014-03-26T21:04:04.936+00:00Derek

I hardly ever have cream teas, but I love the idea of taking time out to have 'tea'and a cordial chat in the afternoon. No doubt it is re-living nostalgic memories of childhood, when we used to stop off for this tea-time treat on the way back from an excursion whilst on holiday. So although it was only once or twice a year (never to be had at home), the performative nature of the cream tea intrigued me, and I really liked the way it was served, so that I had the choice of whether to put the jam or the cream on first, myself (always the cream)! <br />
My Mother's Grandmother hailed from Devonshire (never 'Devon'). <br />

Ok, I'm in the small third bedroom now – and as we have already discussed the merits of crochet, I
thought I would share my blanket with you; made by Granny many years ago, it
has several holes (which, if I were able to crochet I would probably be able to
mend) the culprit was our old cat who loved to sleep on it, but would regularly
pummel it with his claws. I hate to admit this but I have never dared wash it –
although maybe I should rectify this situation? <o:p></o:p></div>

As you can see in the second photo (one with my slippered feet) there used to be a door here at some stage, which was removed. We are not going to put one back.<br />

On into the kitchen, a galley type space, with units along one side and the sink, cooker and washing machine on the other. After renovating the kitchen (over our first Christmas holiday in this house), we knocked through<br />
the back wall last summer to put a door (instead of a window) at the end of the kitchen. This necessitated changing the location of the sink, and therefore the plumbing and radiator position. So finishing and redecoration of this space is now being saved as a job for this summer.<br />

On the stainless steel work surface is a spoon rest. It was found in a charity shop for 75p. It looked kind of familiar. It turned out that my Mum had one exactly the same. She doesn't know what happened to it. Maybe it got lost when they moved house? <br />

Outside the bathroom hang a row of gym bags on a set of old
hooks (these were found on a roadside somewhere in Greece, and bought home as
hand luggage, not your average holiday souvenir). The gym bags are my bathroom
cabinet – the bathroom itself is small with limited free wall space – so the
bags, which are themed – hold various bits and pieces; for example spare
shampoo, conditioners and soaps in one – all things medicinal in another – etc.
Is the medicine/bathroom cabinet endangered I wonder?<o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-size: small;">(which ok, admittedly has been quite a while) the base of the stairs has changed quite a bit! The paper has been scraped off the walls to reveal the original decoration underneath (plus quite a few new patching jobs to do) and the position of the newel post has changed to be two steps up from the bottom of the staircase. The re-site of the post has now changed how the stairs can be navigated (can step up from the side), and has also widened the hallway - as you may notice from the pic - the two bottom stairs are removable which 'well whaddya know' know, when they are taken away - it makes it possible to steer a vinatge vespa scooter all the way through our terraced house and ot into the workshop beyond!</span></div>

I just HAD to sneak these in! (I thought it would be ok to look back over my shoulder at the upstairs landing as I was going back down the stairs). The week before last we stripped the wallpaper(layers and layers!)off the walls from landing and down the stairs - and all of these fragments were found after peeling off the last whole layer. It was the very first wallpaper to be hung here - isn't it an amazing pattern!? You can see how bright the blue colour was in the detail pic (which also shows a very fetching crack going upwards from the corner of the bedroom door).<br />
<br />
We were so excited about finding the first piece - we did some super speed-stripping and had the rest of this wall done in half an hour phew!<br />
<br />
(The rest of the stairs took <i>much</i> longer - covered in anaglypta, varnish, lining paper, emulsion, gloss paint, plaster, and layers and layers of paper.)<br />
<br />

<br />
We also managed to take down the brackets and pedestals (not shown) from beneath the arch in the hallway, and to our surprise, underneath layers of a distemper-like gunge, there was some details of acanthus leaves and flower. This had all been covered up to make a smooth shape instead - we liked the detail, so S cast some new ones, so we'll always have spares!Angie Butler: Letterpress Printed Artists' Bookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05415548914081932042noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3885871091736369107.post-78797728140390011372013-06-05T19:11:00.001+01:002013-06-05T19:13:40.508+01:00The banister. <br />
Didn't really want to spend any longer in the upstairs bathroom, so we're walking back down the stairs now - often music (of every kind) fills every room in this house - but sometimes, when I'm on my own and 'over-thinking', the most evocative track is <span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><b><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqU5Uhdl75s" target="_blank">Dogwood Blossom</a></b></span> by Fionn Regan. Beautiful and melancholic.<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Keep climbing into my head without knockin'<br />
And you fix yourself there like a map pin<br />
On this ghost of this street where I'm livin'<br />
I'm in a chrysalis and I'm snowed in</span></span>
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
Darling, darling that dam's gonna give<br />
It's inevitable the way that you live<br />
Bottles in brown paper and a mouth that slurs<br />
All the shit that it stirs<br />
Let that dogwood blossom</span></span>
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
There'll be hell to pay in heaven<br />
For you take every street home</span></span>
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
What happens when you're into deep to break<br />
Loneliness keeps you constantly awake<br />
What happens when the passage of time appears <br />
You see yourself as a child and it brings you to tears</span></span>
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
You say that you're troubled and you always have been<br />
Uncomfortable in your own skin<br />
So you contemplate the riverbed<br />
Turn off the dark thoughts in your head</span></span>
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
Darling, darling that dam's gonna give<br />

As you come out of the bedroom, immediately on your left (at the top of the stairs is the bathroom, (if you can call it that). It's the one room that we have done no work in, after ripping up the (soggy) carpet. It's a mess, stripped back to original floorboards, most of which we'll have to replace, and also a large chimney, which would've orginally been part of the oven in the kitchen downstairs. It's going to be a job probably for next year, but will be great to enjoy having a bath in nicer surroundings when it's finished!</div>

In a former life this glass cabinet was a shop display for cakes. It’s not particularly beautiful but it does have a certain oddness that I like.</div>

The display and choice of objects was never really planned,
it’s more a case of what actually fits onto the limited shelf height; several objects

<br />
The level of the garden at the back of our house had sometime ago, been made higher, to enable Audrey (in her later years) to tend her garden without having to bend down. When we moved in, there were lots and lots of daffodils out in bloom, nodding their yellow heads welcomingly, in the April sunshine. Audrey's Brother had planted all the bulbs (as a gift) before winter had set in, so she would have a "nice show come spring time," so Margaret said.<br />
<br />
It was such a pity that Audrey never got to see them.<br />
<br />
Though I did, every day - until they too, died. I so appreciated their glowing abundance. <br />
<br />
I found these pieces of blue and white when I first dug our garden, a few years back now. There were quite a few more pieces, but I have only kept these two (the rest are back in the garden soil). I put them outside on the kitchen windowsill for a while, yet that now have come to rest on the wooden shelf unit in the bedroom. I wonder if they were pieces from Audrey and Albert's old china plates?<br />
<br />
I especially like the larger shard as it has a beautiful wing painted on the back of either some kind of creature or Angel type figure.Angie Butler: Letterpress Printed Artists' Bookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05415548914081932042noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3885871091736369107.post-47998733300364000242013-01-25T11:55:00.000+00:002013-03-14T08:19:56.522+00:00The Inherited Sewing Basket<!--StartFragment-->

There is actually quite a lot of furniture in this room, some
of which offers really good storage; from the practicalities of the plan chest,
to the chrome locker, to a white – reasonably new – cabinet (or should that be
side-board? quite an old-fashioned name).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Hidden in here is an eclectic mix of ‘stuff’ – including my inherited
sewing basket; I have decided to show this item purely because you were asking
questions regarding its appearance in a previous post. So here is my quite
unlovely sewing basket, inherited from D’s mother after she died, because none of
his three sisters wanted it. As you can see, it is not quite as orderly as
yours!! But despite the tattered, unstuck braiding, and the broken handle, the
contents were what attracted me most. A little bit of family history in a box. </div>

So, after entering the bedroom looking round to the left hand side now, following the wall we have something that I enjoy looking at a lot - a hand painted silk kimono, hung on a bamboo pole on the wall. I don't wear it, as I like to admire it this way instead. You may also recognise the wooden shelf unit (from the studio in an earlier post) which is much more suited to being up here in the bedroom - I think it also takes on quite an eastern appearance being in close proximity with the kimono! There are quite a few different items on the shelves now that weren't there before - wondering if I should do a few close-ups if there's anything you'd like to see a little better?<br />
<br />
Ok, here are a few close up pics from the shelves: <br />

<br />
In the ottoman below the shelf are lots of crochet doilies which I have acquired from a few different places - an amazing charity shop in Denmark had some lovely ones, and over here ... well, I've bought them from various ladies at craft stall and charity shops, and been crocheted some especially too. Some are made by hands that are no longer here.<br />
They are testament to a believed lost craft, but with a recent resurgence of 'the handmade', there are many new crochet blankets and doilies in the shops again, if you look carefully.<br />
<br />
(I laid the doilies on the washing basket near the bedroom window to take this photo, as it was a little too dark for the colours to shine, over the other side of the room, on the ottoman today)<br />

<br />
So after walking back along the upstairs hallway from the Typewriter Room, this door on the left leads into the bedroom. The door has been re-hung (as have a few others in the house) to open inwards, but the other way round i.e. opening left to right (with the handle on the left), instead of right to left (with the handle on the right). I believe the doors were hung right to left orginally, so that there would be a few seconds from when you opened the door, before you set eyes upon who was inside the room. This was to protect one's (Victorian) modesty, and allowed the person within the room a moment to adjust themselves/make themselves presentable for their visitor. Where as if you open the door left to right, you see inside the room immediately.<br />
I just found it quite a cumbersome way to enter a room, and the arc of the door opening took up unnecessary space within the room so decided to re-hang the door, so that it would open against a wall, rather than into the room.<br />
<br />
This door as you can see, needs to be stripped down and re-painted. Like a few other doors in this house, it had pieces of hardboard tacked on both sides completely covering the original panelled door underneath. What a find!<br />

The final room downstairs (apart from a small cloakroom) is
what we refer to simply as the front room (or according to your recent list, the sitting room, living room or lounge). This space has good proportions,
which makes it flexible and easy to reposition the furniture, which I do quite
often. During the process of this tour the room has actually undergone a quick
makeover. The photos show three different views of the room – each with a before and after photograph. </div>

A slight detour now… one of the doors from the hallway leads
into the under stairs cupboard. This is only the second house we have owned
with such a space, and I must admit it is quite generous. It is also further
evidence of how the house layout has been tweaked. The door entering the
cupboard seems to be a later addition, as once inside you can see that part of
the wall is just plasterboard and there is another doorway which was the
original entrance to a much smaller cupboard space. (sorry about the quality of the images, it is quite
difficult to take photos in such a limited area). The original space is seen on

The previous owners used the newer addition (seen above) as an office and
had a computer and chair in here! We use it to store everything from a bike,
typewriter (of course), printer, wine, paint, tools, wellies, ironing pile and
much, much more! It is also home to the ironing board – which recently survived
an 8 hour spell of the iron being left on accidently – I can certainly vouch
for its fire-proofness! </div>

I tend to iron in the kitchen, and the process itself is
quite ritualistic – I always start with the easy items such as pillowcases,
napkins and hankies, then progress to clothing, always leaving awkward items
such as shirts until last. I never iron sheets or duvet covers. (but sadly I do
iron tea towels). D only wears t-shirts, and sees ironing as totally
unnecessary. His mother however was an obsessive ironer – she usually did it late
at night whilst watching television – she had one on those ironing boards with a
seat attached! it would not be unusual for her to still be ironing well after
midnight, (they were a family of six). She ironed everything – including
underwear and socks! </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For me, ironing is done on an ad-hoc basis, I’ll sometimes iron
just one item that I want to wear; or if the pile starts to teeter I will
usually do something about it; (occasionally I arrive home to find that my Mum
has popped in and decided to tackle the ironing pile for me – fantastic!).</div>

Still in the same room (as all the typewriters) - here's our 'spare' bed, for guests to enjoy a night's sleep at our place, which is also often used in the day for as quiet place to read - it is called a 'day bed' after all.<br />
The symposium I went to last week led by Space Place Practice http://www.uwe.ac.uk/sca/research/place/space.htm got me thinking about a lot of things, which I'll write about in the next few comments. One of which came up was the idea of liminality - it's put quite simply in another blog that is dedicated to travel, which I think is the most easiest experience of liminality to understand and empathise with ...<br />
<br />
'Liminal experiences are those that are characterized by
transitions from one state of being to another. Tourists experience
liminality when they transition from a home-based state of being to a
travel-based state. Liminality also occurs during rights of passage,
such as graduating from school, becoming married, becoming a parent, or
becoming a new employee of a company. The liminal experience is one of
becoming something different, and is potentially transformative, with a
shedding of the old and a creation of something new, but also a period
of vulnerability and weakness in the face of an uncertain future.'<br />
From: <br />
http://tourismplace.blogspot.co.uk/2009/07/i-hate-being-liminal.html <br />
<br />
I've been going through some kind of liminal experience in each room I blog about - (I and) the room always changes in some way afterwards - the space (of the room) becomes a liminal one (in my head at least) when I begin to analyse it. I think I am going through a shift within myself anyway, so therefore this has led to me (through this project) analysing how I live, the objects and items I live with, and their placement within my home - and, in turn, how this affects my life.<br />
<br />
I have also been thinking about nostalgia and the idea of using the old to help us apply new meanings to the future. There was a great line in the symposium which I wrote down. "You can't ignore the past, but you don't have to stay there." A bit more about that tomorrow ...<br />
<br />
Any similar thoughts P?<br />
<br />
Tues 18 Sept.<br />
There were interesting comments from Artist Jane Bailey who's current art practice focuses on engaging with and evoking the
lives of older adults in rural North Cornwall. Her work both explores
and generates connections between people, and between people and places,
which reflects on the contemporary art processes that she employs
including: conversing; recording; editing; reflecting; balancing.
She has been working with people who have dementia, and was talking about them in reference to being nostalgic, and people often remembering events from their past much more clearly than occurences that had happened recently. As their long term memory is so much clearer than their short-term, they are actually existing in two places, at any one time.<br />
<br />
I'm wondering if objects and items from the past, give us more of a sense of 'belonging' than the fabric of the homes that we currently live in. Items that I surround myself with (in my home) seem to make much more sense of 'my position in the world, now.' I know that if I see a photograph of, or an item from our 'family' home it has so much more resonance, and is full of potency, but I couldn't look at those objects on a daily basis.<br />
<br />
In relevance to the above, maybe I should comment about the blanket on the bed ...?Angie Butler: Letterpress Printed Artists' Bookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05415548914081932042noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3885871091736369107.post-40401718211815863072012-09-03T20:38:00.000+01:002012-09-03T20:38:22.563+01:00Nanna's Knives. On the other wall to the right of the door as you go in, is another shelving unit. On the bottom shelf on the far left is a small folding cabinet.<br />
The sewing cabinet is wooden, and has lots of compartments. Most people had one of these in the 1970's. It holds many delights: ribbons, ric-rac, threads and buttons (some of which are still on their cards). My favourite item is a small needle-case with the inscription that reads, 'Trouble Are Ended When They Are Mended.'(second pic down)Angie Butler: Letterpress Printed Artists' Bookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05415548914081932042noreply@blogger.com7
